PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana crosses 60 lakh household mark

This highlights the programme’s acceleration in implementation; from taking 118 days to cover the first one lakh households to adding the same number of families in just six days.

India’s rooftop solar drive has reached a major milestone, with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana recently crossing the 60 lakh household mark. This achievement has covered 60 percent of the Union’s target of powering one crore homes.

The achievement comes just two months after the scheme crossed the 50 lakh household milestone. This highlights the programme’s acceleration in implementation; from taking 118 days to cover the first one lakh households to adding the same number of families in just six days. The acceleration has been supported by greater digital integration, simplified approvals and a wider network of electricity distribution companies, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Launched on February 13, 2024, with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme has so far installed 50, 99,781 rooftop systems, adding 17855.3 MW of decentralised solar capacity to the grid. For households, one of the clearest impacts is showing up on monthly electricity bills. The scheme has completely eliminated their monthly power expenditure, with more than 20.7 lakh beneficiary households reporting zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems under the scheme.

Households can also access collateral-free loans through the Jan Samarth portal at concessional interest rates of around 5.75 percent, with repayment periods extending up to 10 years. These households can also effectively act as electricity consumers as well as active clean-energy producers as the scheme exports surplus solar power back to local grids under net-metering arrangements.

The Centre estimates that the programme could generate around 17 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities spanning solar manufacturing, installation, maintenance and associated supply chains. Against a broader target of three lakh trained personnel, more than 2.5 lakh people have been trained through institutions including the National Institute of Solar Energy, National Power Training Institute and Skill Council for Green Jobs.
